Introduction
There is a place in our heart that often has to break before we let God step in and do the healing He has been waiting to give us. Writing Chapter One of TEARS required that I sit in my past ache long enough to write about the betrayal Debra experienced and the courage it took for her to breathe again. The exhibition of Debra’s pain was not written for shock or drama. It was written as a key to the doorway to wholeness, the moment where rejection becomes the soil for restoration. In shaping Debra’s story, I was reminded that healing often begins at the moment we feel marred.
What Happened in Chapter One
This chapter looks not only at the ways heartbreak can happen, but how it can change our lives for the better. Chapter One is where Blair betrays the promise of love and Debra pays the price. She feels marred, yet the potter does not throw her away. Instead, He reshapes her, showing her that even in heartbreak, He is present, guiding her toward becoming whole.
Why It Had to Happen
Heartbreak sets the tone for the restoration. It is the catalyst that moves her from wounded to whole. It reveals the places where God intends to restore her identity, worth, and voice. Without this heartbreak, Debra would never have confronted the truth about her cognitive dissonance, the tension between what she believed about love and what she was actually experiencing.
What I Learned From Looking Back
Reflecting on this chapter reminds me that pain and healing often sit side by side. Sometimes the creation of our story requires both of these immense emotions, and a small shift in circumstances can instantly turn one into the other. In the final scene of Chapter One, Debra recognizes that breath is life. She inhales, and with the release of that breath, she finds enough strength to rise.
